Piazzale Michelangelo was built in the 19th century by the architect Giuseppe Poggi as a monument to the most important sculptor of that time. In the middle of the piazza you will see a bronze cast of David facing Florence from the center of the vast square, the Forte Belvedere and the Chiesa di San Salvatore al Monte. Beyond the city are the green hills of Fiesole and Settignano. Dedicated to Michelangelo Buonarroti, the Piazzale not only has one of Florence's two David copies, it also has the bronze copies of the four allegories of the Medici Chapel of San Lorenzo. From the piazza, a five minute stroll up past the church of San Salvatore we will pass to the beautiful basilica of San Miniato al Monte, standing atop one of the highest points in the city with absolutely the best view.
